Frequently Asked Questions
Below are the answers to questions we receive pretty often but if you have a question that is not listed, fill out our Contact Us form and a Step 2 the U Administrator will reach out within 24 hours.
There are 3 programs that are available for select students who wish to attend the University of Utah during high school: our Early Admission Program, the High School University Program (HSUP), and Youth Education.
Students are issued a uID (University ID#) when they enroll in Early College courses. This allows the students to use the Marriott Library and have a University email address.
Your uID also allows you to login in the Campus Information System (CIS).
The Campus Information Services (CIS) is a resource for students to receive information at the University. You can view your class grades, update personal information, setup your email, and view the other classes available at the University. To sign in initially, you will need your uID. Your password is your birthday (with two digit month, day, and year formatted as MMDDYY). Once you have signed in you can change your password to one of your choosing.
Student Success at the University of Utah is captured in the Utah Pledge. The Utah Pledge highlights the importance of learning communities, mentors, advisors, financial planning and deeply engaged learning experiences. Step 2 The U activates three elements of the Utah Pledge. Step 2 The U uses integrated and applied learning as primary learning outcomes. Each summer provides an integrative, thematically oriented, pathway (i.e., Culture and Leadership) through General Education. Step 2 The U also offers wrap around support from a peer mentor, a student success advocate and a University College Advisor. Students will finish work with a meaningful culminating integrated project. Step 2 The U allows for students to complete most or all of their General Education requirements in one year. All faculty included in this program have been selected because of their demonstrated commitment to student success.
- The cost for Step 2 The U is $5 per semester credit for all classes taken during the summer between junior and senior years ($90.00 for 18 semester credits). The 2nd summer block (after graduation) is $10 a semester credit for a total cost of $120 for 12 semester credits.
- A typical cost for a 30 semester credit schedule would cost an in-state resident approximately $15-20,000 in tuition, fees, parking and books.
Students and parents can pay semester credit charges at the start at each semester term:
- Payment for the 1st summer will be paid to Alta or Jordan High School. Payment can be made at your high school's main office.
- Payment for the 2nd summer will be made to the Continuing Education Department at the University of Utah. You will receive more information via email.
Example Weekly Schedule for Students:
- First Year: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday – 5 - 6 hours a day
- Second Year: Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday – 5 - 6 hours a day
- One small cohort of students who will be collectively focused on an integrated learning approach with a community based project application as the culminating project.
Academic Standards are grade point average (GPA) requirements and academic standings for non-matriculated and matriculated undergraduate students. When a student’s cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0, there are specific and strategic interventions that a student must complete in order to maintain enrollment at the university. Our advisors are here to help at any point in a student’s journey towards academic success and program completion. Please view the University of Utah Academic Advising Center’s website for more information: https://advising.utah.edu/academic-standards/standings-definitions.php
As defined by the University of Utah Student Code, “Plagiarism means the intentional unacknowledged use or incorporation of any other person's work in, or as a basis for, one's own work offered for academic consideration or credit or for public presentation. Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, representing as one's own, without attribution, any other individual's words, phrasing, ideas, sequence of ideas, information or any other mode or content of expression." (See Student Code B Definitions. 2c.)
Plagiarism may result in requiring a student to retake an exam or rewrite a paper, a grade reduction, a failing grade, probation, and/or suspension or dismissal from the Step 2 The U Program.
- Your final course grade is recorded on your permanent college transcript. Credit is earned and your final grade is determined by your performance and participation throughout the course.
What if a student fails a Step 2 The U course?
- Failed courses are part of your permanent university transcript and will impact your college GPA and could impact your eligibility for financial aid. They can also impact admissions decision, declaring in majors, and scholarships.
- A grade below a C may not be considered a passing grade in college. Therefore, a student may have to retake the course to get credit for it in college.
What is the difference between a “drop” and “withdraw”
Please see the University of Utah’s Registrar’s Office drop policy [add link: https://registrar.utah.edu/handbook/drop.php] and withdrawal policy [add link: https://registrar.utah.edu/handbook/withdrawal.php]
- We strongly recommend that you drop any class that you are receiving a grade lower than a C in at the drop deadline.
WITHDRAWING FROM A Step 2 The U COURSE
University of Utah Withdrawal Policy
- For detailed information about withdrawing from a course, please go to the University of Utah’s Office of the Registrar’s website: https://registrar.utah.edu/handbook/withdrawal.php
- Students may officially withdraw (W) from a class or all classes after the drop deadline through the midpoint of a course. A “W” grade is recorded on the transcript and appropriate tuition/fees are assessed. The grade of "W" is not used in calculating the student's GPA.
How to withdraw:
- Students facing compelling, non-academic emergencies may petition to withdraw from courses after the withdrawal deadline through the last day of class for the course. The Petition for Consideration of Exception to the Withdrawal Policy is available from Loretta Rowley, Major Maps Coordinator, and Jason Atherton at the University of Utah Academic Advising Center.
- Please contact Loretta to discuss this option.
